iPod black screen

Screen black or blank, dark but still working, or black and won't turn on? Pick what happens and your model to see the free checks and the likely causes.

Most common causes, by model

First make sure it isn't just empty or frozen: charge it for at least 30 minutes and reset it. If it plays music or shows up on a computer but the screen stays black, the screen has failed or is not properly connected to the logic board; if a new screen doesn't fix it, the logic board.

Free checks first

  1. Charge it for at least 30 minutes: Apple says a very empty iPod can take that long to turn on, and its display can stay dark while it charges.
  2. Reset it: press and hold Menu and the center (Select) button for 8 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. If that fails, put the iPod on a table and press the center button without touching the wheel.
  3. Reset the 3rd Gen: hold Menu and Play/Pause until the Apple logo appears.
  4. Press and hold Menu for about 4 seconds: Apple says this resets a screen contrast that was set too light or too dark.
  5. To turn the backlight on, press and hold Menu (or choose Backlight in the main menu).
  6. Opened it before? Check that the screen cable is fully inserted and its latch is closed.
