iPod static noise

Static, crackling, buzzing or distorted sound? Pick what you hear and your model to see the free checks first, then the likely causes and what each fix costs.

What exactly happens?

Which iPod do you have?

Not sure which one? Identify your iPod

Most common causes, by model

Push the plug in all the way, wiggle it and try another pair of headphones. Static or crackling that changes when you move the plug means the headphone jack or its cable is worn. Static or hiss with every pair of headphones and in a speaker dock points to the logic board. If only the same few songs crackle, it is quite possibly in the recording itself, or those song files are damaged: check them on your computer.

Free checks first

  1. Push the headphone plug in all the way.
  2. Wiggle the headphone plug while it is in the jack. If that doesn't fix it, try another pair of headphones. If that fails too, the headphone jack or its cable is the likely fault.
  3. Try it in a speaker dock: sound from the dock but not from the headphones points to the headphone jack; no sound from either points to the logic board.
  4. Check the song files on your computer for damage or corruption.

  1. Most likely

    Worn or damaged headphone jack

A worn or damaged headphone jack cuts the sound out, crackles, or plays in one ear only, often when you move the plug. A new headphone jack fixes it.

Free check first Move the plug gently while a song plays: if the sound cuts out or crackles, the jack is worn.

  1. Most likely
