One ear not working
A worn, damaged or corroded headphone jack cuts the sound out, crackles, or plays in one ear only, often when you move the plug. On the 4th Gen and Photo, one ear or crackling is the headphone jack board itself; its flex cable is the suspect when the iPod sticks on Hold. A new headphone jack fixes it.
Hold switch not working
A faulty headphone jack cable can keep the iPod locked, so the click wheel cannot wake it. The cable doesn't have to be damaged: it may just not be snapped fully into the logic board or pushed fully into the headphone jack board. It easily comes out when the case is first opened, for example in a battery swap.
Hold switch stuck
The Hold switch is part of the headphone jack assembly. If it is broken, stuck, or leaves the iPod locked with the switch off, a new headphone jack assembly fixes it. On the 4th Gen and iPod Photo the Hold switch sits on its own board (the headphone jack board), with its slider on a plastic bracket.

Hold switch dead
On most models the Hold switch is part of the headphone jack assembly, so a new assembly fixes a broken one. Stuck on lock: on the 4th Gen and Photo, check the headphone jack cable first (often just not pushed fully in); on the 3rd Gen, a torn or unseated headphone jack cable, or the Hold slider out of line with its switch on the logic board.
