Two different parts can break. Ink-like spots, dark patches or lines in the picture mean the screen (LCD) behind the front is broken: a new screen. If the picture is fine under a cracked clear window, only the front needs replacing: the faceplate (front panel on the 3rd and 4th Gen, glass lens on the Mini).
