iPod white screen

White screen, the white screen of death, or white after a repair? Pick what happens and your model to see the likely causes and what each fix costs.

Most common causes, by model

A white screen while the iPod still works (it plays music or shows up on a computer) most often means the screen has failed. Right after a repair, its cable is usually not fully plugged in. If a new screen is still white, the logic board is the likely fault.

Free checks first

  1. Reset it: press and hold Menu and the center (Select) button for 8 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. If that fails, put the iPod on a table and press the center button without touching the wheel.
  2. Reset the 3rd Gen: hold Menu and Play/Pause until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Press and hold Menu for about 4 seconds: Apple says this resets a screen contrast that was set too light or too dark.
  4. Opened it before? Check that the screen cable is fully inserted and its latch is closed.
