A swollen battery is worn out and no longer safe: stop charging it and replace it.
Free checks first
- A sweet, metallic or acetone smell can be gas escaping a swelling battery.
- 3rd Gen (and sometimes the 4th Gen): a swollen battery rarely bulges the case, so an open seam after the case was closed, if it isn't a bent back panel, is often a case not snapped together properly: work a plastic pry opening tool or thin metal spudger around the seam.

Swollen battery
A battery that swells is worn out and no longer safe. On the 6th and 7th Gen the battery sits behind the screen: swelling can leave dark pressure marks or spots on the screen or make it lift or bow, and the case can bulge, usually at the top. In some cases the front and back panel separate at the seam, and light from the backlight can sometimes be seen shining through it. An open seam on its own is often bent metal tabs or railing inside the inner back panel. Stop charging it and replace the battery.
Free check first Unplug it first. If it is extremely hot or smells, don't try to remove the battery. Open the iPod and look at the battery: if it is swollen, stop charging it and replace it. Never press on, bend or pierce a swollen battery; tape the old battery's terminals or bag it and take it to a battery drop-off, never the trash or a recycling bin.

A battery that swells is worn out and no longer safe, and the case almost never bulges, so a flat case doesn't rule it out. On the 4th Gen and Photo it pushes up under the click wheel, so the center button stops working, and the wheel can scroll by itself or stop responding. Stop charging it and replace the battery.

Questions
How long should an iPod battery last?
Apple's music playback times when new: the Classic up to 30 to 40 hours depending on the model, the Video 14 to 20, the 4th Gen 12, the Photo 15, the Mini 8 or 18, the 3rd Gen over 8. If yours dies much sooner, the battery is most likely worn out.
How do I get rid of an old iPod battery or a dead iPod?
Not in the trash or the recycling bin. Apple says to dispose of an iPod according to local environmental laws, and the EPA says lithium-ion batteries, and devices that contain them, don't belong in household garbage or recycling bins. Tape over the old battery's terminals or put it in its own plastic bag, and take it to a battery recycling or household hazardous waste drop-off. Apple also recycles any Apple device, batteries included, for free at Apple Stores.
