iPod center button not working

Select button not responding, stuck, or loose? Pick what happens and your model to see the likely cause. A stuck button on the 5th Gen is most often a slipped rubber dome you can put back, and on the 4th Gen and Photo a swollen battery.

Free checks first

  1. Put the Hold switch firmly in the unlocked position. A locked iPod ignores every button.
  2. Check whether the wheel scrolls and the other buttons work. If only the center fails, the fault is under the cap, not the cap itself: the switch, or what presses on it or holds it in place.
  3. Reset it: press and hold Menu and the center (Select) button for 8 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. If that fails, put the iPod on a table and press the center button without touching the wheel.
  4. Reset the 3rd Gen: hold Menu and Play/Pause until the Apple logo appears.

    Click wheel or its cable

If the wheel, the buttons and the center fail together, or work only now and then, the click wheel or its cable is the usual cause. If only the center button fails, a new click wheel or its cable typically does not fix it on the 5th, 6th and 7th Gen. The click wheels of the iPod Classic (6th and 7th Gen) and the iPod Video look alike but don't swap: order the one for your model.

Questions

How do I fix the center button on my iPod Classic?

Put the Hold switch in the unlocked position first. On the iPod Video (5th Gen) a stuck center button is usually its rubber dome that slipped, and it can be put back. On the iPod Classic 6th and 7th Gen a center button that does nothing when clicked is far more common than a stuck one: reset it (hold Menu and the center button until the Apple logo appears), which is the most likely fix; if that doesn't solve it, the logic board is the likely fault. For other models, pick your iPod above.
