iPod keeps turning off

Shuts off randomly, by itself, or as soon as you unplug it? Pick what happens and your model to see the likely causes in order and what each fix costs.

Most common causes, by model

An iPod that keeps turning off most often has a worn-out battery. If it shuts off even with a good battery, the logic board is the likely fault.

Free checks first

  1. Plug it into power, then try again.
  2. The iPod classic turns itself off when it gets too hot: let it cool down before you use it again.

  2. Put the Hold switch firmly in the unlocked position. A locked iPod ignores every button.
  3. Reset it: press and hold Menu and the center (Select) button for 8 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. If that fails, put the iPod on a table and press the center button without touching the wheel.
  4. Reset the 3rd Gen: hold Menu and Play/Pause until the Apple logo appears.
