Apple's checks first: the Hold switch off (with an iPod Remote, its Hold switch too), then reset it. On the 4th Gen, Photo and Mini, Menu, Play/Pause, Next and Previous are part of the click wheel; on the iPod Classic (6th and 7th Gen) and the iPod Video they are small switches on the logic board, read through the click wheel and its cable. Fix order: the click wheel cable, then a new click wheel, then the logic board. On the 3rd Gen the four buttons above the touch wheel: the touch wheel cable, then the front panel, then the logic board.

Free checks first

  1. Put the Hold switch firmly in the unlocked position. A locked iPod ignores every button.
  2. Using an iPod Remote? Its own Hold switch must be off too: Apple says the iPod's and the remote's Hold switches work separately.
  3. A lock icon at the top of the screen means the Hold switch is on: slide it to the unlocked position.
  4. 3rd Gen: if a lock shows on the screen and the buttons and wheel do nothing, it is most likely a torn or unseated headphone jack cable (stuck on Hold even with the switch off).
  5. Reset it: press and hold Menu and the center (Select) button for 8 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. If that fails, put the iPod on a table and press the center button without touching the wheel.
  6. Reset the 3rd Gen: hold Menu and Play/Pause until the Apple logo appears.

Center button not working

Also searched as center button stuck · middle button not working · centre button not working · middle button stuck · select button stuck · center button not clicking

The center (Select) button doesn't respond, sticks or won't click. On the 5th, 6th and 7th Gen, restart first (hold Menu + Center a few seconds) before assuming the logic board; a new click wheel or its cable usually does not fix it. On the 6th and 7th Gen the center switch sits on the logic board. On the 4th Gen, Photo and Mini the center switch is part of the click wheel assembly (4th Gen and Photo: a swollen battery first).

See iPod center button not working

Free checks first

  1. Put the Hold switch firmly in the unlocked position. A locked iPod ignores every button.
  2. Check whether the wheel scrolls and the other buttons work. If only the center fails, the fault is under the cap, not the cap itself: the switch, or what presses on it or holds it in place.

Headphone jack cable keeping it locked

A faulty headphone jack cable can keep the iPod locked, so the click wheel cannot wake it. The cable doesn't have to be damaged: it may just not be snapped fully into the logic board or pushed fully into the headphone jack board. It easily comes out when the case is first opened, for example in a battery swap.

Free check first Put the Hold switch firmly in the unlocked position and look for a lock symbol at the top of the screen. If it still shows, the headphone jack cable is likely loose or faulty: open the iPod and push it fully back into the logic board and the headphone jack board before buying a new cable.

A battery that swells is worn out and no longer safe, and the case almost never bulges, so a flat case doesn't rule it out. On the 4th Gen and Photo it pushes up under the click wheel, so the center button stops working, and the wheel can scroll by itself or stop responding. Stop charging it and replace the battery.

Free check first Unplug it first. If it is extremely hot or smells, don't try to remove the battery. Open the iPod and look at the battery: if it is swollen, stop charging it and replace it. Never press on, bend or pierce a swollen battery; tape the old battery's terminals or bag it and take it to a battery drop-off, never the trash or a recycling bin.
