  1. Unplug it, switch it off and lock HoldDisconnect any cable, charger or computer first. Switch the iPod off by holding Play/Pause until the screen goes dark, then slide the Hold switch to locked, so its orange bar shows.
  2. Release the case clipsOur opening guide has the detail. In short: with the screen up and the dock connector toward you, start on the right-hand long side with the wide plastic tool, its edge tilted toward the steel back, and free the five tabs on that side. Then the two clips beside the dock connector (lightly past the thin steel there), the five tabs on the left-hand side, and the top edge.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fix charging, audio, storage, or screen problems?

No. A backplate is passive rear housing. Use it for dented, scratched, bent, missing, or custom rear-case work, not as an electronics diagnosis.

Is this an iPod Classic?

Apple's 'Classic' branding started with the 6th Generation (2007). This is the color-screen iPod photo / iPod with color display generation, not a Classic-branded model.

Should I choose by capacity or by thin/thick case?

Measure the case depth first, then pick the engraving. A thin 20GB or 30GB iPod photo is about 0.63 in (16 mm) front to back; a thick 40GB or 60GB one is about 0.75 in (19 mm) — one step you can feel with a ruler or by standing the two side by side. Depth outranks the engraving, because a rear shell swapped by a previous owner carries whatever capacity was engraved on it rather than the drive now inside, and a back of the wrong depth will not close. With the depth settled, choose the listing engraved with the capacity you want to read on the back.

Does this include the headphone jack, Hold switch, or cable?

No. This is the rear backplate shell. Transfer the headphone jack, Hold switch hardware, and cable from your original rear case, or replace those parts separately if they are damaged.

What changes if I fit a bigger drive?

The case depth changes, and that is a set of parts rather than one. A 40/60GB drive is 8 mm tall and a thin 20/30GB body is built for a 5 mm drive, so the conversion needs a thick backplate like this one, the thick hard-drive bumpers and the thick headphone-jack assembly. The headphone-jack flex cable is the same part for every capacity, so that one you keep. Forcing an 8 mm drive under a thin back presses the case onto the drive stack and marks or breaks the LCD. The simpler route is to keep every thin part and fit a 5 mm 50-pin drive, or flash storage we fit by mail (our flash mod service).

Will a monochrome fourth-generation front panel fit this iPod?

The monochrome fourth-generation front panel is not a verified swap — buy the Photo faceplate. The two bodies look alike from outside but differ inside: this model's panel takes five logic-board screws to the monochrome's six, and the display connector sits elsewhere on the board.
