Sad face, red X, or a clicking drive — the model's signature drive failure

Symptoms. Sad-iPod icon or a red X with the Apple support address; rhythmic clicking or grinding from the drive — often two clicks, a pause, two clicks, like a heartbeat; Apple logo for a second or two, clicks, then shutdown; whirring and endless reboot attempts; a frozen play counter or distorted sound as an early warning.

Quick diagnosis.

  1. Battery before drive: a worn battery that can't deliver spin-up current makes a healthy drive register as failed. If the iPod behaves only on wall power, or died alongside a flat battery, test with a good battery before buying a drive.
  2. Clean and inspect the dock connector (isopropyl alcohol, compressed air, no bent/corroded pins) and try another cable and computer — cheap eliminations first.
  3. Then let the drive speak for itself: pull it and connect it to a computer through a USB drive adapter. Full access = the drive lives, and suspicion moves to the cable and battery; no access = the drive is done.

Quick diagnosis.

  1. The workhorse sequence: force disk mode (Menu + Select until reboot, then immediately Select + Play — check mark, "Disk Mode" at top), connect, and run the iTunes restore from there. Documented owners cleared the "busy" error exactly this way; the combo can take several tries.
