About this part
Overview
This is the black faceplate replacement for iPod Classic 6th Generation 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB models. Use it for scratched, cracked, dented, bent, scuffed, worn, cloudy-lens, color-swap, or custom-build front-panel work after matching color. A front that lifts at the seam is usually not the faceplate: on this model an open seam is often bent metal tabs inside the back panel, and sometimes a swollen battery (look for pressure marks on the screen).

Install and repair
Step-by-step guide
iPod Classic 6th/7th Gen front panel and metal frame replacement
Tools: Plastic opening picks (two or three), Thin metal opening tool, Phillips #00 screwdriver, Plastic spudger and tweezers, Air blower, Anti-static wrist strap or mat, Soft, clean cloth, Charger and headphones you know work
- Open the caseUnplug any cable. Switch the iPod off (hold Play/Pause until the screen goes dark) and slide Hold to locked. Open it as our opening guide shows: plastic picks keep the seam open along one long side while the tip of a thin metal tool pushes each clip in toward the front panel, rocking on the steel back's rim. Free both long sides, then the one clip in the middle of the top edge, between the Hold switch and the headphone jack. Leave the bottom edge clipped: it is the hinge.
- Unplug the battery firstPart the top ends a little, no further: the battery ribbon and the headphone ribbon still join the two halves. Now and then the drive comes away stuck to the back half, or the battery plug pops out as the case opens, so check for both, and ease a stuck drive back down into the front half.
Install Overview
Rather not open it? Choose We Fix It above: mail your iPod in and we fit it. Turnaround is typically 3 to 5 business days. 1-year limited warranty.
Faceplate replacement is a very difficult no-solder front-panel job. The hardest parts are opening the Classic shell, protecting ribbons, and reseating the display framework and click wheel before final closure.
Case opening risk
Very Difficult. Metal clips hold the case together. Opening often bends the rear panel.
Ribbon cables
Disconnecting battery and headphone jack ribbons required. ZIF latches are fragile.
Framework handling
The display and click wheel sit in a metal framework that must be carefully separated from the old faceplate.
Click wheel seating
When reassembling, confirm the click wheel button is seated correctly in the new faceplate.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit both thin and thick cases?
Yes. The faceplate is the same for thin 80GB and 120GB models and thick 160GB models. The color is cosmetic: a faceplate of any color fits any of these models.
Is this the same as the front panel, front cover, or front housing?
Yes. Other sellers call this part the front panel, front cover, front housing, face plate or faceplate; it is the same front shell part.
Does this include the click wheel?
No. The click wheel and center button are separate parts. Transfer yours from the old faceplate, or order the matching color click wheel if it is damaged.
Does this include the screen or LCD?
The clear screen lens window is integrated into the faceplate. The LCD display behind it is a separate part.
Is this metal or plastic?
This faceplate is anodized aluminum, like the original.
