How to open the iPod 4th Gen and iPod Photo
Tools: Plastic opening tools, one wide and one thin, Plastic spudger, T6 Torx and fine Phillips (#00 or PH-000) screwdrivers, Anti-static wrist strap or mat, Soft cloth and a small tray, Wall charger
- Unplug it, switch it off and lock HoldDisconnect any cable, charger or computer first. Switch the iPod off by holding Play/Pause until the screen goes dark, then slide the Hold switch to locked, so its orange bar shows.
- Know where the clips areNothing is screwed shut. The white front snaps into the steel back with five tabs down each long side and two clips on the bottom edge, one either side of the dock connector. Both models are built the same way here, so they open and close alike.

Which screw goes where?
Sort as you go. Lay the screws out in the order and position you removed them, or tape each one next to its hole; the lengths are not interchangeable across locations, and a screw that is too long for its post presses on what sits beneath it. If the screws are already mixed up, start each one by hand and stop at the first resistance rather than driving it home.
Will a screw set fix electronics symptoms?
No. Screws are passive fasteners for reassembly. Diagnose power, storage, audio, display, and control faults separately.
What tools do I need to install these screws?
Two drivers. Six of the eleven screws are Torx T6 and five are Phillips-head — you need a T6 Torx screwdriver and a fine Phillips driver (the set is specified as PH-000; use whichever fine Phillips bit, #00 or PH-000, seats without slipping). Neither driver is included with the screw set. You also want a thin pick or plastic opening tool to part the case, because the halves are clipped rather than screwed together.
Is this an iPod Classic?
Apple's 'Classic' branding started with the 6th Generation (2007). This is the iPod 4th Generation (Click Wheel), the monochrome-screen model from 2004. Apple's official name for this model is iPod (Click Wheel).
