About This iPod
The 4G was also notable for being the first full-size iPod to benefit from the HP partnership (announced January 2004 at CES), which put iPods on shelves at retail locations where Apple had no presence and pre-loaded iTunes on millions of HP and Compaq PCs. HP sold the iPod+HP in both 20GB (PE435A) and 40GB (PE436A) variants with dual Apple/HP branding on the back.
About This Variant
HP-branded 20GB sold by Hewlett-Packard as “Apple iPod from HP” from around August 2004 at US$299.99. It is the same hardware as Apple’s M9282LL/A with an HP logo on the back; warranty service went through HP rather than Apple, so service history differs from Apple-sold units.

What the HP badge changes, and what it does not
What differs: the branding and the paperwork. HP put its own logo on the back below the Apple logo and shipped the iPod in an HP-styled box. Warranty and service ran through HP, not Apple: these were HP products, so Apple Store Genius Bars were not authorized to repair them and they went to an HP Authorized Service Center. HP announced on July 29, 2005 that it would stop shipping HP-branded iPods, so the line was short-lived and HP support for it is long gone.
What does not differ: the hardware. It is the same A1059 iPod inside — the same monochrome screen, the same Click Wheel, the same drive and battery families, the same 30-pin dock and the same firmware behavior. Every 4th Generation part on this site fits it - take the thin (20GB) version where a part comes in thin and thick (hard drive, back, headphone jack, drive bumpers); a stock replacement back won't carry the HP logo - and it restores and syncs exactly like an Apple-badged unit. The HP logo is not a different model and does not need HP software.
What Changed
- Processor: Upgraded to a dual-core processor at 80 MHz with 32 MB RAM
- Storage: 20GB ($299) and 40GB ($399) — dropped smaller capacity tiers
- Features: 'Shuffle Songs' added to main menu — a nod to the increasingly popular shuffle playback mode that would soon inspire the iPod Shuffle
What's Included
- Refurbished iPod
- 1-year limited warranty
Ships as the iPod only — no cable, wall charger, or headphones are included. A restore that stops at a picture of a plug must finish on a wall charger (Apple's A1070 power adapter is the ideal choice; a generic charger may not give the right voltage).

Questions
Buyer FAQ
What should I check when it arrives?
Confirm the capacity, color and Apple model number against Exact Model Identification (the order number is on the box or receipt, not on the iPod). Then test charging, sync/restore, controls, audio, hold switch, display, and several full tracks before loading your library. This listing is for 20GB, White (HP), PE435A.
Does this work with my Mac or PC?
On a Windows PC use iTunes for Windows — often the simplest way to restore it. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later sync in the Finder (iTunes on older Macs); if a current Mac will not see the iPod, fall back to an older Mac or a Windows PC.
How long does the battery last on a used one?
Apple rated the original at up to 12 hours of music. A new standard 750 mAh battery is fitted before it ships, or the extended-life 1,200 mAh battery if you pick it under Battery above. A flash build plays longer on a charge than the same iPod on its hard drive.
Is an HP-badged iPod worth less, or harder to repair?
Harder to repair, no: it is the same A1059 hardware as the Apple-badged 20GB, so every 4th Generation part on this site fits it - take the thin (20GB) version where a part comes in thin and thick (hard drive, back, headphone jack, drive bumpers); a stock replacement back won't carry the HP logo - and it restores and syncs exactly like an Apple-badged unit. What the badge changes is history rather than function — HP, not Apple, handled warranty service when these were new, and HP stopped shipping them on July 29, 2005. Collectors treat the HP back as a variant to look for rather than a fault; identify it by the HP logo under the Apple logo on the back and by PE435A on the listing.
Should I buy stock or Flash-Storage Modded?
Choose stock if you want the original hard-drive experience. Choose a flash build if you want solid-state storage, lower power draw, and no spinning hard drive. For this generation we build flash iPods at 128GB or 256GB.

Refurbished and custom
Your music. Your kind of iPod.
Pick your iPod, then its color, storage and battery. On the iPod Video 5th Gen and the iPod Classic 6th and 7th Gen you can also choose a new case in your colors and, with flash storage, the 2000mAh extended-life battery. Every iPod we sell is cleaned, tested, fitted with a new battery and covered by a 1-year limited warranty.
Want a silent iPod? Choose flash storage: it has no moving parts to wear out, and it goes up to 1TB on the 60GB and 80GB iPod Video 5th Gen and the iPod Classic 7th Gen.
