The 4G was also notable for being the first full-size iPod to benefit from the HP partnership (announced January 2004 at CES), which put iPods on shelves at retail locations where Apple had no presence and pre-loaded iTunes on millions of HP and Compaq PCs. HP sold the iPod+HP in both 20GB (PE435A) and 40GB (PE436A) variants with dual Apple/HP branding on the back.

The 40GB White is the thick-case member of the pair, launched alongside the 20GB on July 19, 2004 at US$399 — 0.69 inches deep and 6.2 oz against the thin 20GB's 0.57 inches and 5.6 oz. The extra depth is the taller dual-platter hard drive; the screen, Click Wheel, battery family and software are the same as the 20GB. Apple retired it on February 23, 2005, four months before the 20GB, so it had the shorter shelf life of the two.
