iPod center button not working

Select button not responding, stuck, or loose? Pick what happens and your model to see the likely cause. A stuck button on the 5th Gen is most often a slipped rubber dome you can put back, and on the 4th Gen and Photo a swollen battery.

Most common causes, by model

Free checks first

  1. Put the Hold switch firmly in the unlocked position. A locked iPod ignores every button.
  2. Check whether the wheel scrolls and the other buttons work. If only the center fails, it is the switch underneath, not the cap.
  3. Reset it: press and hold Menu and the center (Select) button for 8 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. If that fails, put the iPod on a table and press the center button without touching the wheel.
  4. Reset the 3rd Gen: hold Menu and Play/Pause until the Apple logo appears.

  1. Most likely

    Click wheel or its cable

If the wheel, the buttons and the center fail together, or work only now and then, the click wheel or its cable is the usual cause.

Free check first If the iPod was opened, check that the click wheel cable is fully seated and its latch is closed.

Won't help The visible center cap is not the fix for a press that does not register: it has no electronics.

Questions

How do I fix the center button on my iPod Classic?

Put the Hold switch in the unlocked position and reset it first. On the Classic 6th and 7th Gen the center button's switch is part of the logic board, so if only the center fails, the logic board is the likely fix; a new cap won't help. A stuck button is extremely rare on these models and is usually an alignment issue.
